about

I wrote some songs in 2013. I always intended to record them properly, but they started to slip through the cracks once I moved. I felt I could not attain the appropriate volume which the songs demanded, fearing the neighbours would pound on their ceiling, or knock on my front door uninvited. However, these songs could no longer bear to be left unrecorded, and it started to feel a little unlawful. So now, recordings exist. I hope they delight you.

Love,
Jordan

1. The One-Armed Man

Sometime in the early months of 2013 I was hiking some trails on the outskirts of Victoria. I started singing. I started to sing, "The One-Armed Man". In April 2016 I busted up my wrist. My doctor told me I should refrain from using it in any way, but instead I broke out the old Portasound keyboard and selected the glockenspiel tone. Because that's what rockers do.

2. Former Inhabitants

In September 2013 I was hosting a house show and I really needed to have one more song ready. I was just getting used to my new surroundings in fernwood, but I was still hankering to write about cruising around in the Alberta winter.

3. Almost Connected

In 2016, the pitch shifting option in logic sounded too cool with the Portasound brass tone.

4. The Creek Near La Glace, AB

In May 2013 I moved all of my guitar amps musical equipment into a large basement near the outskirts of Grande Prairie, AB. I was starting to see the value in fuzzy, drop b guitar tuning. I went full basement-goblin style, huddling in the corner, strumming out lengthy, sustained chords. Didn't hear any complaints from the neighbors, I think they must like that kind of thing.

5. Ogden Point at 11pm

There's literally weird sounds over there.

6. Patroclus Fights and Dies

I wrote this one at the same time as "the creek", in a Grande Prairie basement. I was watching a distant lightning storm and reading the Iliad. This song is very inspired by the chapter of the same name.

Track Name: The One-Armed Man

I thought I heard a human voice on the pathway
But it was nothing
It was nothing
As far as I could tell there was nobody there
I saw no evidence of civilization way down there

Track Name: Former Inhabitants
/// /// /// /// /// /// /// /// ///

Cold wind blowing over Alberta
Becoming warm, traveling alone
Sweeping past the homes, dark sense of foreboding
Coursing through dim-lit eyes, waiting for something

I was driving too fast over the hill
I thought I saw a face on the side of the building
I thought I saw a face inside the house

Track Name: The Creek Near LaGlace, AB
/// /// /// /// /// /// /// /// ///

Calm and prostrate
In the foul, foul creek
In a tranquil watching state
I do believe
Unresigned and still
Still as the moonlight
And the roads that I drove upon
Had crumbled and closed

To the north there is a route
I traveled in the summer
And I witnessed everything
Lingering between the stones
At the bottom of the creeks bed
Breathed by the trees and the atmosphere
Petrified, and locked in a watching state
Locked in a watching state

Distant horns
War is in my heart

/// /// /// /// /// /// /// /// ///
Track Name: Patroclus Fights and Dies
/// /// /// /// /// /// /// /// ///

Soon
Soon
Soon the wave of thrashing bronze
By the will of deathless gods
I lay my head on ancient stone
Far from the shores of my own home
Haggard specters swirling down
I'll join them soon

Before the day lays to waste
My body as it's torn away
Before my sight begins to fade
And the night closes in
Did I lead us into ruin?
Was I cursed beyond my mortal reach?
Oh my desperate straits
